The millinery craft

Kirsti is a modist, which is French for "person working with fashion". The word is used in several countries about craftsmen who make ladies' hats. English-speaking countries use the word milliner.

The trade had its golden period around 1850-1950. The milliners were numerous especially in the period after World War I, - also in Norway.

Kirsti was the first trainee in Norway in this trade for over 30 years when she signed a contract with The Norwegian Broadcasting Television in 1990.  The trade-study was then due to be discontinued.  From 1955 (the year the first curriculum was made) to 1963, only a few milliners took their diploma in Norway.
In the 1990's less than 10 diplomas have been taken in this craft in Norway.

The education in Norway lasts for 4 years,- 2 years in school and 2 years in a workshop.  In Norway the milliner works in her own workshop, at the theater/films or television.
